Centipedes and Millipedes

  • There are over 3,000 Centipede/Millipede species in the world with bodies ranging from 3 to 26 cm in length
  • The rule is the less legs it has, the faster it can run
  • Centipedes/Millipedes avoid dehydration by hiding in dark humid places during the day under stones, bark and other debris and hunting for food at night
  • Found all over the United States, Mexico, and South America

The Bite

  • Centipedes/Millipedes are non-aggressive
  • Venom is mild to moderate
  • Signs and symptoms include:
    • Mild pain that last about 15-30 min.
    • Local irritation and swelling
    • Itchy and tender for several days

First Aid

  • Keep the victim well hydrated (give plenty of liquids for the first 8 hrs.)
  • Have a Tetanus shot update if it has been more than 10 years since your last one.
  • Always wash the area affected with soap and water
  • Keep victim hydrated-lots of liquids for first 8 hrs.
  • Have a Tetanus shot update if more than 10 years
  • Call poison center at 1-800-222-1222 for instructions - allergic reactions may occur
  • Do not:
    • Cut the area or attempt to suck out the poison
    • Try to capture the centipede/millipede
    • Apply any substance/chemical to the affected area without consulting the poison center first
  • Hospitalization is not usually required
