Poisons can be harmful or even lethal if we eat them, drink them, breathe them, or get them in our eyes or on our skin. Thousands of people in Texas are accidentally poisoned each year. Many involve medications, drain cleaners, insecticides, antifreeze, and other household/garage products. Any non-food item can be a potential poison. Poisonings may occur at anytime and to anyone. Following these simple prevention tips can help prevent accidental poisonings.
- Avoid keeping medications on counter tops, bedside tables or easy to reach areas
- Use safety-lock tops on all medications
- Use security devices on cabinets containing cleaning products or substances
- Regularly clean out medicine cabinets and dispose of old or outdated medications
- Don’t take any medicine that is not yours
- Don’t take medications in front of children
- Never call medicine candy
- Always read the label carefully, put on your glasses if needed
- Follow all product and medication instructions
- Keep all products in their original container
- Store potentially poisonous products out of sight and out of reach of children
- Never store non food products in the same place as food products
- Empty all ash trays promptly
- Keep cigarette products and alcoholic beverages out of reach of children
- Keep paint in good repair
